‘Cowardly Attacks of Terrorism’ and Everything in Between.

A day after Bacha Khan University attack I was en route to university in bus when I eavesdropped on two male students of probably my own university discussing the threats and probability of a similar attack on NED University. One of them exclaimed:
Aik tou ye jo kehte hain ‘buzdilana hamla hai’. Abay bhai, kya buzdilana, main gate se tou wo khullum khulla guns aur bomb le k dakhil hote hain, terrorists tou 7-8 hote hain, unko maarne k liye Army commandos itnay saray aate hain”
[And when they (Govt & Media) say ‘It is a cowardly attack’. What is ‘cowardly’ about it? Terrorists enter through main gates with bombs and guns, undeterred. Terrorists are usually 7-8 in number but to counter them, several Army commandos are required]
In the wake of Lahore Blast yesterday that killed more than 70 people, half of them being Christians who just wanted to enjoy a bit of their Easter and 50 of them being children; innocent, harmless and not at all involved in drone attacks, operation in North Waziristan, blasphemy or execution of Mumtaz Qadri, the same old repertoire of “Cowardly attack” is on the lips of politicians, journalists, military high-command and news anchors. This reminded me of the conversation I overheard and even I am compelled to ask, what is ‘cowardly’ about this attack?
Several hours before the unfortunate Lahore blast, a mob of radical fascists had held federal capital, Islamabad, under siege. The protesters claim to be supporters of ex-Punjab Governor, Salman Taseer’s murderer Mumtaz Qadri’s supporters but brand themselves as Ashiqan e Rasul SAWW [Lovers of the Messenger PBUH], they have long beards as apparently Sunnah of Mohammad PBUH, but their actions don’t really comply with the actions and preaching of Mohammad PBUH, they claim to be guardians of Mohammad PBUH’s respect and honor but ironically put His PBUH’s name to more shame and disrespect.
Their school of thoughts is another debate but throughout their march to Parliament house and holding Islamabad under siege, the Prime Minister, the Defence Minister and the Interior Minister were nowhere to be seen. The only signs of State’s presence were hinted in a tweet by Director General Inter-Services Public Relations, Lt. Gen Asim Bajwa which disclosed that the civilian state institution had given up and military had been called to take charge of the federal capital. Such information could have been, or rather should have been communicated to media by Information Ministry or Interior Ministry
The absolute silence and absence of Govt. in the wake of Islamabad siege earlier on 27th March 2016 and Lahore Blast, later on the same day is something that qualifies for every definition of ‘cowardice’.
The terrorists are not ‘cowards’, they openly target whenever and wherever they want to. The actual cowards are our very own, ‘elected representatives’ who despite having the mandate to protect us against all odds, are afraid of coming out and confronting the terrorists.
Sham accusations of ‘This is a cowardly attack by terrorists” don’t affect the unflinching resolve of terrorists, neither their ego is bruised when we call them ‘cowards’. They come and strike back even more aggressively whenever we challenge them by calling them ‘cowards’.
